Zegerid FAQ's

IMPORTANT: The FAQ answers below do NOT contain all the information about this particular drug. These answers are not substitutes for a medication guide, pharmacist consultation or the advice of your health care professional. What is a Zegerid?

  • Zegerid is a combination of omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate. It is used to treat certain conditions where there is too much acid in the stomach. It is used in treating and preventing ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or “heartburn.”

How does Zegerid work?

  • Zegerid is a combination of a proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole, which helps to decrease the acid in your stomach and an antacid, sodium bicarbonate, which helps to increase the pH of your stomach or make it less acidic.

Do you need a prescription for Zegerid?

  • Zegerid is a prescription but is sold over the counter as Zegerid OTC.

Is Omeprazole the same as sodium bicarbonate?

  • No, omeprazole is not the same as sodium bicarbonate but both work together to achieve the same goal of reducing stomach acid and the symptoms associated with it. Omeprazole is in a family of medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) which block the pumps that release acid into the stomach. Sodium bicarbonate is considered an antacid and increases the pH of the stomach meaning it makes it less acidic. Sodium bicarbonate helps enhance the absorption of omeprazole.
