What is Lansoprazole used to treat?

  • Lansoprazole, the generic name for Prevacid, is used to treat reflux disease, a condition when stomach acid travels upward through a loose sphincter muscle and enters the food pipe (esophagus) causing a dull pressure like pain in the chest.

What are the most common side effects of Lansoprazole?

  • Common side effects of Lansoprazole include headaches, dry mouth, and dizziness.

What are the long term side effects of Prevacid?

  • Generally, reflux treatment with Lansoprazole should last no longer than 2 weeks. Some studies suggest long term use (more than a year) of Lansoprazole can lead to serious malabsorption issues and increased risk of infection.

  • You should use Lansoprazole for the shortest duration possible or as recommended by your doctor.

How should I take Prevacid?

  • Prevacid is usually taken once to twice daily about an hour before meals for maximum benefit.

Is it safe to take Lansoprazole?

  • Yes, Lansoprazole is safe and effective. Do not take Lansoprazole if you have allergies or can’t tolerate its side effects. Make sure to take your medication as directed by your doctor.

Can Prevacid cause kidney damage?
