What are the most common side effects of taking birth control pills?
Common side effects of taking birth control include, nausea, vomiting, spotting, weight gain, acne, headache, missed periods, and mood changes.
What do I do if I miss pills?
If you missed 1 pill within the last 24 to 48 hours, take the missed or late pill as soon as you remember. Continue taking the remaining pills at the same time even if it means taking two pills in one day. No additional backup contraceptive is necessary
If you missed 2 or more consecutive pills and more than 48 hours have passed since your last pill, take only the most recent missed pill as soon as you remember and continue taking the pills as scheduled even if it means taking 2 pills in one day. Use backup contraception such as condom or avoid sexual intercourse until you have taken 7 consecutive contraceptive pills. If you missed pills on the last week cycle (days 15 to 21), omit the placebos/iron pills and start a new pack the following day after finishing the active pills.
EC or emergency contraception should be considered if active pills were missed in the first week and if you had unprotected sex in the previous 5 days
What are considered appropriate backup methods?
Appropriate and safe backup methods considered are condoms with spermicide (male and female) vaginal films, cervical cap, diaphragm, pull out method, and abstinence.
What birth control is 100 percent effective?
No birth control is 100 percent effective. Chances are very low, but as long as you are sexually active, there is a chance you can get pregnant no matter what contraceptive method you use. Only method known to be 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy is abstinence.
Can you get pregnant if you miss one day of birth control?
You are still protected and you won’t need to double up or use backup method. Just take one as soon as you remember, even if that means taking two pills in one day, and take the rest of the pack as scheduled.
