Generic manufacturers make medication that has the same active ingredient as the brand-name medication but at a more affordable price. Today generic medications account for nine out of every 10 prescriptions in America. But although the active ingredient in each prescription medication is the same among manufacturers, there might be small differences in inactive ingredients. These differences can include the manufacturing process and the size, color, and shape of the pill. Pricing can also vary depending on the manufacturer.
The difference in medication among manufacturers is especially important for certain condition states that have a narrow therapeutic index, such as medications that treat thyroid-related issues. Inactive ingredients are also important for customers with allergies to gluten, lactose, dyes, and more. For instance, a customer with celiac disease can now choose a manufacturer who doesn’t use gluten in the manufacturing process.
